About Clear Lake

At 68 square miles with 100 miles of shoreline, Clear Lake is California's largest natural freshwater lake and, at roughly 2.5 million years old, one of the oldest lakes in North America. Known as the 'Bass Capital of the West,' its largemouth bass run 2-4 pounds on average with several 10-plus-pound fish caught annually (lake record 17.52 lbs, 1990, and the state-record black crappie, 4.33 lbs, also came from here); bluegill, catfish, and carp round out the fishery.

Mercury levels in the lake's fish can run high; check local advisories before eating your catch, per Lake County's chamber of commerce.
