Common questions
- What lures work for Fathead Minnow?
- Jig tipped with a live fathead minnow, a jig: Bounced slowly along bottom near rock and other structure for walleye, the minnow lip-hooked so it swims naturally. Ice jig tipped with a live fathead minnow, a jig: Fished a few feet off bottom through the ice, the minnow hooked through the tail so its struggling adds extra motion. Small jig tipped with a live fathead minnow, a jig: The same jig-and-minnow rig also takes crappie and panfish in the same forage-rich water fatheads are stocked into.
- What bait works for Fathead Minnow?
- Live fathead minnow, lip-hooked: Hooked through the upper and lower lips, point up, so it swims naturally when cast, retrieved, or trolled slowly for walleye, bass, and panfish. Live fathead minnow under a bobber: Hooked through the back, avoiding the spine, and suspended a few feet under a small bobber near cover, a standard way anglers take panfish on small minnows.
- Where is Fathead Minnow stocked most?

- Breeding males turn almost black with pale yellowish bars and grow a spongy gray pad on top of the head.

Stocked behavior
Fathead minnows are stocked as forage, not as a catch anglers target. Agencies add them to build a food base for bass, walleye, and panfish. They tolerate hauling and release well, since wild fatheads already survive stagnant, low-oxygen water, and spawn repeatedly through the warm months, each pair producing thousands of eggs to rebuild the forage base between stockings.

Common mistakes
- Hooking a live minnow through the spine when back-hooking it for a float-and-sinker rig, which paralyzes it and kills its natural swimming action.
- Using the same hook placement for every presentation instead of matching it to how the bait is fished (lips, back, or tail).
